Maha Shivaratri
Maha Shivaratri (महाशिवरात्रि, 'The Great Night of Shiva') is a major annual festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. Unlike most festivals celebrated during the daytime, Shivaratri is solemnized at night through vigil, fasting, and continuous prayer.
According to the Shiva Purana, Maha Shivaratri marks the night Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction (Tandava). It also commemorates the divine marriage of Shiva and Parvati, and the appearance of the infinite pillar of light (Lingodbhava).
Devotees observe a strict day-and-night fast, maintain an all-night vigil (Jagaran), offer Bilva leaves (Belpatra), milk, water, and honey to the Shivalinga, and perform Four Prahar Pujas spaced throughout the four quarters of the night.
Maha Shivaratri falls on the 14th day (Chaturdashi tithi) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the lunar month of Phalguna (Magha in amanta calendar reckoning), corresponding to February or March on the Gregorian calendar.
Nishita Kaal Puja
The most sacred window of Maha Shivaratri is Nishita Kaal — the 48-minute midnight window when Lord Shiva manifested as the infinite column of light (Jyotirlinga).
Four Prahar Pujas (Char Prahar)
Worship is divided into four watches of the night (Prahar), each with specific offerings of milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, water, and belpatra to the Shivalinga.
Offerings of Belpatra & Abhishekam
Trifoliate leaves of the Aegle marmelos (Belpatra) are offered to Shiva representing the three gunas and the three eyes of the Lord, accompanied by continuous Rudrabhishekam.
All-Night Vigil (Jagaran)
Devotees stay awake through the night singing Shiva bhajans, chanting Om Namah Shivaya, and reciting the Shiva Chalisa, Shiva Sahasranama, and Rudram.
How is the date of Maha Shivaratri determined?
It is fixed on the night when Krishna Chaturdashi tithi overlaps with Nishita Kaal (midnight window). If Chaturdashi overlaps Nishita on two consecutive nights, Nirnaya Sindhu rules determine the primary night.
What is Nishita Kaal?
Nishita Kaal is the eighth muhurat of the night, occurring around midnight. It is considered the most potent time for Shiva worship and meditation.
What items are traditionally offered during Shivalinga Abhishekam?
The Panchamrit ingredients — water, milk, curd, honey, and ghee — along with sugarcane juice, sacred ash (Bhasma), sandal paste, and fresh Belpatra leaves.
When is the fast broken (Parana)?
Shivaratri Parana is performed the following morning after sunrise, before Chaturdashi tithi ends (or after sunrise if Chaturdashi has already ended).
