Siddhivinayak

The Siddhivinayak temple stands in Prabhadevi, in the centre of Mumbai. It is not an ancient hill or forest shrine — it is a city temple, surrounded by the urban fabric of one of India's largest cities. The Prabhadevi area is connected to South Mumbai by road, and the temple is accessible from virtually every part of the city.

This urban context is part of what defines the Siddhivinayak experience. The devotee base is Mumbai itself: film stars and street vendors, financiers and factory workers, students and senior citizens. The Tuesday morning queues — Tuesday being traditionally auspicious for Ganesha — bring together a cross-section of the city that almost nothing else does.

The temple draws approximately 25,000 devotees on ordinary days, rising to 100,000 or more on Tuesdays, festival days, and during Ganesh Chaturthi.

Most Ganesha idols depict the deity's trunk curled to the left — this is the most common form, considered easy to please and appropriate for household worship. Siddhivinayak belongs to a rare category: the idol's trunk curves to the right, a form called Siddha Vinayaka. In traditional understanding, a right-trunk Ganesha is significantly more powerful — and also more demanding. The devotee must approach with complete sincerity; the siddha form is said to grant wishes powerfully but also to note inconsistency.

The main idol at Siddhivinayak is approximately 2.5 feet tall, carved from a single black stone. Ganesha is depicted with four arms, holding a lotus, an axe (parashu), modak (his favourite sweet), and his own broken tusk. On either side of him are his two consorts — Riddhi (prosperity) and Siddhi (accomplishment) — a combination that gives the full name: Siddhivinayak.

The original Siddhivinayak temple was built in 1801 CE by Deubai Patil, a childless woman who reportedly commissioned the shrine as a prayer for others who similarly desired children. This origin story — a woman's prayer becoming a public temple — is remembered in the temple's tradition.

The original structure was modest. Over the following two centuries, the temple grew in prominence alongside Mumbai's growth as a city. Major renovation and reconstruction happened in the 20th century; the current structure — with its distinctive gold dome visible above Prabhadevi's skyline — was substantially rebuilt in 1990. The dome is plated with gold; the inner sanctum's ceiling is decorated with paintings; the main door is carved wood with intricate Ashtavinayak (eight Ganesha) motifs.

The Siddhivinayak Temple Trust today manages the temple and its substantial charitable activities, including hospitals and education institutions.
