What a tithi is
A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to move 12° further from the Sun. A lunar month has 30 of them — 15 in the waxing fortnight (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning (Krishna Paksha).
A tithi is not tied to the clock day: it can begin and end at any hour, and lasts anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours. It is what fixes the day of a fast, a festival or an auspicious undertaking.
