Story of a king who lost everything and regained it through Thursday devotion to Lord Vishnu

Pujan Samagri

॰Lord Vishnu or Brihaspati Dev idol / picture

॰Yellow cloth for the chowki — yellow is the color of Brihaspati

॰Yellow flowers — marigold, sunflower, champa

॰Banana plant — to decorate the puja area (Brihaspati's sacred tree)

॰Turmeric (haldi) — essential for Thursday puja

॰Chana dal (Bengal gram) — the primary Thursday offering

॰Panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar

॰Yellow fruits — banana, mango, lemon

॰Roli (kumkum) and Akshat (whole rice)

॰Ghee diya and dhoop (incense)

॰Camphor for aarti

॰Yellow sweets — besan laddoo, chana laddoo

॰Gangajal for abhishek

॰Mauli (yellow sacred thread)

॰Paan (betel leaf) and Supari

Pujan Vidhi(सूर्यास्त तक / Until sunset)

On Thursday, rise early and bathe. Wear yellow or clean white clothes. Make the sankalp: 'I observe Brihaspativar Vrat for wisdom, prosperity and Vishnu's grace.'

On the chowki spread yellow cloth. Place Vishnu's image or Brihaspati's picture. Decorate with yellow flowers and a banana plant on each side.

Perform abhishek with Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar), then with Gangajal.

Offer turmeric (haldi), yellow flowers, chana dal, and yellow fruits. Light the ghee diya and dhoop.

Chant 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' 108 times. Chant 'Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah' 108 times.

Listen to or read the Brihaspativar Vrat Katha with full attention.

After katha, perform the Vishnu aarti or Brihaspati aarti. Distribute yellow prasad (chana laddoo, banana) to all.

Fast throughout the day. Eat one vegetarian meal without salt at sunset — preferably yellow dal (chana dal) and rice. Break fast only after sunset puja.

Sampurna Katha

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय॥ ॐ बृं बृहस्पतये नमः॥ गुरु बृहस्पति देवाय नमः॥

Salutations to Lord Vasudeva (Vishnu). Salutations to Brihaspati Dev. Obeisance to Guru Brihaspati.

भगवान वासुदेव (विष्णु) को नमस्कार। बृहस्पति देव को नमस्कार। गुरु बृहस्पति देव को प्रणाम।

॥ बृहस्पतिवार व्रत कथा ॥

प्राचीन काल में एक राजा था जिसका राज्य धन-धान्य से परिपूर्ण था। वह प्रजा का पालन माता-पिता की तरह करता था। प्रत्येक बृहस्पतिवार को राजा व्रत रखता, भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करता और ब्राह्मणों को भोजन करवाता था। किंतु उसकी रानी को यह व्रत पसंद नहीं था। वह भोग-विलास में विश्वास रखती थी और व्रत को समय की बर्बादी मानती थी।

In ancient times, a virtuous king observed the Thursday fast every week, worshipped Lord Vishnu and fed Brahmins. However, his queen considered the vrat a waste and refused to honour it.

एक धार्मिक राजा हर बृहस्पतिवार व्रत करता और ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराता था। परंतु उसकी रानी इस व्रत को व्यर्थ मानती थी।

एक बृहस्पतिवार को बृहस्पति देव साधु वेश में राजमहल में पधारे। राजा उनकी पूजा करने लगा। रानी ने कहा — 'यह साधु बेकार है। इन्हें भिक्षा देना व्यर्थ है।' साधु वेश में बृहस्पति देव ने रानी से कहा — 'देवी! जो बृहस्पतिवार व्रत का तिरस्कार करती है, उसे इसका फल भोगना पड़ता है।' इतना कहकर वे चले गए। रानी ने कोई ध्यान नहीं दिया।

Brihaspati Dev came disguised as a sage. The king reverently worshipped him, but the queen disrespected him. The sage warned her that those who mock the Thursday vrat must face its consequences, then departed.

बृहस्पति देव साधु वेश में आए। राजा ने पूजा की पर रानी ने उनका अपमान किया। बृहस्पति देव ने चेताया और चले गए।

कुछ समय बाद बृहस्पति देव की माया से राज्य में अकाल पड़ गया। धन-संपत्ति नष्ट हो गई। राजा के सात पुत्र थे — सभी परदेश चले गए। राजा अकेला पड़ गया और भिक्षा माँगने को विवश हुआ। रानी पछताई। उसने राजा से क्षमा माँगी और बोली — 'यह सब मेरे व्रत-अपमान का फल है।'

By Brihaspati's divine play, famine struck the kingdom. Wealth vanished, all seven sons left for distant lands, and the king was reduced to begging. The queen, full of remorse, realised her grave mistake.

बृहस्पति देव की माया से राज्य में अकाल आ गया। राजा के पुत्र परदेश चले गए और राजा भिखारी हो गया। रानी को अपनी गलती का अहसास हुआ।

उसी नगर में एक बुढ़िया बृहस्पतिवार व्रत करती थी। राजा भिक्षा माँगते हुए उसके घर पहुँचा। बुढ़िया ने उसे व्रत की विधि और कथा बताई — कहा कि 'तुम भी यह व्रत करो।' राजा ने तुरंत व्रत का संकल्प किया। उस दिन उपवास रखा और कथा सुनी।

In that city, an old woman faithfully kept the Thursday fast. The king, begging at her door, learned the vrat's method and katha from her. He immediately took the vow and began fasting that very day.

नगर की एक बुढ़िया ने राजा को बृहस्पतिवार व्रत की विधि बताई। राजा ने तुरंत व्रत का संकल्प लिया।

बृहस्पति देव ने राजा की भक्ति देखकर उसी रात साधु वेश में उसके सपने में आकर कहा — 'हे राजन! उठो। तुम्हारी भक्ति स्वीकार हुई। कल प्रातः तुम्हारे राज्य में स्वर्ण का भंडार प्रकट होगा, तुम्हारे पुत्र वापस आएंगे और तुम्हारा राज्य पुनः समृद्ध होगा।' सवेरे राजा ने देखा — महल में धन भर गया, सातों पुत्र लौट आए, प्रजा प्रसन्न थी। राजा-रानी ने बृहस्पति देव की जय-जयकार की। तब से राज परिवार ने आजीवन बृहस्पतिवार व्रत किया। दीर्घकाल तक सुखपूर्वक राज्य भोगकर दोनों विष्णुलोक को गए। ॥ इति बृहस्पतिवार व्रत कथा सम्पूर्ण ॥ श्री विष्णु भगवान की जय॥ श्री बृहस्पति देव की जय॥

That night, Brihaspati Dev appeared in the king's dream and blessed him. At dawn wealth flooded the palace, all seven sons returned, and the kingdom flourished again. The king and queen joyfully praised Brihaspati Dev. They kept the Thursday vrat for life and ultimately attained Vishnuloka.

बृहस्पति देव ने स्वप्न में राजा को आशीर्वाद दिया। सुबह धन, पुत्र और राज्य सब वापस मिले। राजा ने आजीवन व्रत किया और अंत में विष्णुलोक गए।

॥ व्रत फल ॥ जो मनुष्य बृहस्पतिवार का व्रत श्रद्धापूर्वक करता है और कथा सुनता है — बृहस्पति देव की कृपा से उसे ज्ञान, धन, यश और परिवार में सुख-शांति मिलती है। संतानहीन को संतान, निर्धन को धन और मोक्षार्थी को मोक्ष मिलता है। ॥ श्री विष्णु भगवान की जय॥

Fruit of the vrat: One who faithfully observes Brihaspativar vrat receives knowledge, wealth, fame, family happiness and ultimately liberation through the grace of Brihaspati Dev and Lord Vishnu.

व्रत फल: बृहस्पतिवार व्रत से ज्ञान, धन, संतान, यश और अंत में मोक्ष मिलता है।

ॐ जय जगदीश हरे, स्वामी जय जगदीश हरे। भक्त जनों के संकट, दास जनों के संकट, क्षण में दूर करे॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

O Sovereign Lord of the entire universe, victory to You! You dispel the distress and hardships of Your devotees and servants in a single moment.

हे संपूर्ण जगत् के स्वामी ईश्वर! आपकी जय हो। आप अपने भक्तों और सेवकों के कष्टों तथा संकटों को एक क्षण में दूर कर देते हैं।

जो ध्यावे फल पावे, दुख बिनसे मन का। स्वामी दुख बिनसे मन का। सुख सम्पति घर आवे, सुख सम्पति घर आवे, कष्ट मिटे तन का॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

Whoever meditates upon You receives the fruits of their devotion, and the sorrow of their mind vanishes. Peace and prosperity enter their home, and physical afflictions are erased.

जो आपका ध्यान करता है, वह मनोवांछित फल प्राप्त करता है और उसके मन का दुख दूर हो जाता है। उसके घर में सुख-समृद्धि आती है और शरीर के कष्ट मिट जाते हैं।

मात पिता तुम मेरे, शरण गहूं किसकी। स्वामी शरण गहूं किसकी। तुम बिन और न दूजा, तुम बिन और न दूजा, आस करूं जिसकी॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

You alone are my mother and my father; whose refuge else should I seek? There is no other besides You in whom I can place my hope.

आप ही मेरे माता और पिता हैं, मैं आपके सिवा किसकी शरण में जाऊं? आपके अतिरिक्त मेरा कोई दूसरा नहीं है, जिससे मैं कोई आशा रखूं।

तुम पूरण परमात्मा, तुम अन्तर्यामी। स्वामी तुम अन्तर्यामी। पारब्रह्म परमेश्वर, पारब्रह्म परमेश्वर, तुम सब के स्वामी॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

You are the perfect Supreme Consciousness, the inner knower of all hearts. You are the Supreme Cosmic Reality, the Sovereign Master of all.

आप परिपूर्ण परमात्मा और सभी के हृदय की जानने वाले अन्तर्यामी हैं। आप ही परब्रह्म परमेश्वर हैं और समस्त सृष्टि के स्वामी हैं।

तुम करुणा के सागर, तुम पालनकर्ता। स्वामी तुम पालनकर्ता। मैं मूरख खल कामी, मैं मूरख खल कामी, कृपा करो भर्ता॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

You are an ocean of compassion and the sustainer of all creation. I am ignorant and filled with worldly desires; O Provider, bestow Your grace upon me.

आप दया और करुणा के सागर हैं तथा संपूर्ण जगत् के पालनहार हैं। मैं अज्ञानता और कामनाओं से घिरा हुआ हूँ, हे प्रभु! मुझ पर अपनी कृपा कीजिए।

तुम हो एक अगोचर, सब के प्राणपति। स्वामी सब के प्राणपति। किस विधि मिलूं दयामय, किस विधि मिलूं दयामय, तुमको मैं कुमति॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

You are beyond sensory perception and the Lord of every living soul. O Merciful One, how can a seeker of limited intellect like me attain You?

आप इन्द्रियों की पहुंच से परे (अगोचर) हैं और सभी जीवों के प्राणों के स्वामी हैं। हे दयालु प्रभु! मुझ जैसा सीमित बुद्धि वाला जीव आपको किस प्रकार प्राप्त कर सकता है?

दीन-बंधु दुख-हर्ता, तुम ठाकुर मेरे। स्वामी तुम ठाकुर मेरे। अपने हाथ उठाओ, अपने हाथ उठाओ, द्वार पड़ा तेरे॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

You are the friend of the helpless and the remover of grief; You are my Lord. I lie at Your doorstep—reach out Your hands and lift me up.

आप दीनों के बंधु और दुखों का हरण करने वाले मेरे स्वामी हैं। मैं आपके द्वार पर पड़ा हूँ, अपना कृपाहस्त उठाकर मुझे संभालिए।

विषय-विकार मिटाओ, पाप हरो देवा। स्वामी पाप हरो देवा। श्रद्धा भक्ति बढ़ाओ, श्रद्धा भक्ति बढ़ाओ, संतन की सेवा॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

O Lord, eradicate worldly attachments from my mind and remove my sins. Nurture within me deep faith, devotion, and the spirit of service toward the virtuous.

हे देव! मेरे मन के विषय-विकारों और पापों को नष्ट कर दीजिए। मेरे हृदय में श्रद्धा, भक्ति और सत्पुरुषों की सेवा की भावना को बढ़ाइए।

तन मन धन सब कुछ है तेरा, स्वामी सब कुछ है तेरा। तेरा तुझको अर्पण, तेरा तुझको अर्पण, क्या लागे मेरा॥ ॐ जय जगदीश हरे॥

My body, mind, and worldly wealth all belong to You. I surrender back to You what is already Yours; what is truly mine to claim?

मेरा शरीर, मन और धन सब कुछ आपका ही दिया हुआ है। जो आपका है, वही आपको समर्पित करता हूँ; इसमें मेरा अपना क्या है?
