Sampurna Katha
Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna how the Ekadashi tithi came into being, how it came to be held holy, and why it is dear to the gods. In answer, Krishna told him this story.
In the Krita age there was a demon named Mura, so fierce that all the gods feared him. He was the son of the demon Talajangha and lived in the city of Chandravati. He defeated Indra and all the gods and drove them out of heaven, and set others in the places of Indra, Vayu, Agni, the Moon, the Sun and Varuna. The gods wandered on the earth.
In fear the gods went to Lord Mahadeva, and Indra told him everything and asked for a remedy. Mahadeva told them to take refuge with Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world, whose banner bears Garuda. Indra went there with the gods and found Lord Vishnu asleep in the midst of the waters.
With folded hands Indra praised Lord Vishnu and said that the gods, in fear of the demon, had come to him for refuge, and begged his protection. The Lord asked what the demon was like, how strong he was and where he lived, and Indra told him all about Mura. Hearing it, Lord Vishnu grew angry and resolved to kill the demon.
Lord Vishnu went with the gods to the city of Chandravati, and Mura, seeing him, challenged him. First the demon army came forward, and the Lord destroyed it with his divine arrows and his discus. But Mura fought on alone, and the gods were scattered. Then Mura and Lord Vishnu fought hand to hand for a thousand divine years.
The story says that Lord Vishnu, worn out by that long battle and overcome by Mura, withdrew to Badarikashrama. There was a cave there named Simhavati, twelve yojanas in extent and with a single door. The Lord entered it and slept. Mura followed him into the cave. Seeing him asleep, he was glad and resolved to kill him.
At that moment a maiden came forth from Lord Vishnu's body. She was beautiful, bore divine weapons, and was born of a portion of the Lord's own radiance. Mura saw her and began to fight her. The maiden was skilled in every kind of battle. At her roar Mura was burnt to ash. When the demon was slain, Lord Vishnu awoke.
Seeing the demon dead, the Lord was amazed and asked who had killed this fierce enemy of his. The maiden said that the demon had driven the gods from heaven and, finding the Lord asleep, had come to kill him. The Lord asked how she had conquered one who had overcome even him. She answered that it was by his own grace that she had slain the great demon. From this point the story calls her Ekadashi.
Pleased, Lord Vishnu told her to ask for a boon. Ekadashi asked him for three promises, and the Lord gave his word. She then asked that by his grace she be foremost among all tirthas, the destroyer of all obstacles and the giver of all success; that those who fast on her day with devotion gain success; and that to one who keeps upavasa, nakta or ekabhakta he grant wealth, dharma and moksha. Lord Vishnu said that all she asked would come to pass.
