dhyāyet ṣaḍānanaṁ devaṁ mayūravaravāhanam | śaktihastaṁ mahotsāhaṁ sarvaśatrunibarhaṇam || koṭisūryapratīkāśaṁ kumāraṁ brahmacāriṇam | subrahmaṇyamahaṁ vande kārtikeyaṁ mahādyutim ||

Meaning: One should meditate upon the six-faced Lord, riding upon the noble peacock, holding the spear of divine power (Shakti/Vel), filled with immense vigor, destroyer of all inner and outer enemies, brilliant like ten million suns, the eternal youth and celibate sage—I bow to Subrahmanya, of great spiritual splendor.

The Birth of the Six-Faced Commander

When the demon Tarakasura oppressed heaven, a boon protected him from defeat by any being except a son born of Shiva's penance. Six sparks of divine fire emanated from Shiva's third eye, carried by Agni and Ganga into the Saravana reed forest. The six infants were lovingly nurtured by the six Krittika maidens. When Parvati embraced them together, they united into one radiant six-faced child, Shanmukha, who routed the forces of darkness and restored peace to heaven.

The Sacred Vel: The Spear of Wisdom

Mother Parvati gifted Kartikeya the invincible spear known as the Vel. In Hindu philosophy, the Vel is not a weapon of cruelty, but of Jnana (supreme wisdom): its base is deep (grounded in humility), its shaft is straight and slender (single-pointed concentration), and its blade is broad and sharp (penetrating intellect that cuts through illusion).

The Great Pilgrimage: Arupadai Veedu

In Tamil Nadu and throughout South India, Lord Murugan is revered as the soul of the Tamil culture and guardian of mountain shrines. The six sacred battle camps (Arupadai Veedu)—including Palani, Tiruchendur, and Swamimalai—draw millions of pilgrims who carry the Kavadi as an act of profound thanksgiving and penance.
