Verse 1
The Supreme Lord said: The wise speak of an eternal banyan tree with its roots above and branches below, whose leaves are the Vedic hymns; one who truly understands this tree is a knower of the Vedas.
Verse 2
Nourished by the three modes of material nature and with sense objects as its twigs, its branches extend above and below, and its roots spread downwards, binding human beings to actions in the mortal realm.
Verse 3
The real form of this tree is not perceived here in the world—neither its beginning, its end, nor its foundation; one must cut down this deeply rooted banyan tree with the strong weapon of detachment.
Verse 4
Thereafter, one must seek that supreme state from which, having once reached it, seekers never return, taking shelter of that original Supreme Being from whom this primeval cosmic manifestation expanded.
Verse 5
Free from false pride and delusion, victorious over the fault of attachment, dwelling constantly in the Self, with desires quieted and liberated from the dualities of pleasure and pain, the undeluded attain that eternal state.
Verse 6
That supreme abode of Mine is not illumined by the sun, nor by the moon, nor by fire; having reached it, beings never return to this material world.
Verse 7
An eternal fragment of My own self becomes the living entity in the world of life, drawing unto itself the six senses, including the mind, which abide in material nature.
Verse 8
As the wind carries fragrances away from their source, so the soul, presiding over the body, gathers these senses and mind along when it leaves a physical frame and enters a new one.
Verse 9
Resting upon the sense of hearing, sight, touch, taste, smell, and the mind, the embodied soul experiences the diverse objects of the senses.
Verse 10
The ignorant do not perceive the soul departing, abiding, or enjoying the senses under the influence of nature's modes; only those blessed with the eyes of spiritual wisdom perceive it.
Verse 11
Endeavoring yogis perceive this truth situated within the Self, but the undisciplined whose minds are unpurified cannot see it, despite their persistent efforts.
Verse 12
The brilliant radiance residing in the sun that illuminates the entire universe, and which is also present in the moon and in fire, know that splendor to originate from Me.
Verse 13
Entering the earth, I sustain all living beings by My vital energy, and becoming the nectarous moon, I nourish all plants and vegetation.
Verse 14
Becoming the digestive fire situated in the bodies of all living creatures, and balanced with the incoming and outgoing breaths, I digest the four varieties of food.
Verse 15
I am seated deep within the hearts of all beings, and from Me arise memory, knowledge, and their loss; by all the Vedas I alone am to be known, for I am the author of the Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas.
Verse 16
There are two kinds of beings in this world: the perishable and the imperishable; the physical bodies of all creatures are perishable, while the steady indwelling soul is called imperishable.
Verse 17
Yet distinct from both is the Supreme Person, proclaimed as the Paramatman (Supreme Self), the imperishable Lord who pervades the three worlds and sustains them all.
Verse 18
Because I transcend the perishable world and am superior even to the imperishable soul, I am celebrated both in the world and throughout the Vedas as Purushottama (the Supreme Person).
Verse 19
Whoever, free from delusion, knows Me in this way as the Supreme Divine Person becomes a knower of all truth and worships Me with their whole heart, O Bharata.
Verse 20
Thus, O sinless one, this most confidential scripture has been revealed by Me; understanding this, a person becomes truly enlightened and attains the fulfillment of all life's endeavors, O Bharata.
