Sankhya Yoga (The Yoga of Knowledge)

Verse 1

Sanjaya said— To him who was thus overwhelmed with pity, whose eyes were filled with tears and who was distressed with grief, Madhusudana (Krishna) spoke these words.

Verse 2

The Lord said— O Arjuna! Whence has this faint-heartedness overtaken you at this crisis? It is unworthy of a noble soul, does not lead to heaven, and brings disgrace.

Verse 3

O Arjuna! Yield not to unmanliness; it does not befit you. Shake off this faint-heartedness, O scorcher of foes, and arise!

Verse 4

Arjuna said— O Madhusudana! How shall I fight in battle against Bhishma and Drona, who are worthy of worship, O destroyer of enemies?

Verse 5

It is better even to eat beggars' food in this world without slaying these noble teachers. For having slain them, I would enjoy in this world pleasures stained with blood.

Verse 6

We do not even know which is better for us— whether we conquer them or they conquer us. Those very sons of Dhritarashtra stand arrayed before us, by slaying whom we would not wish to live.

Verse 7

My nature is overcome by weakness and compassion; my mind is confused about duty. I ask you— tell me decisively what is good for me. I am your disciple and have taken refuge in you. Instruct me.

Verse 8

I see nothing that would remove this grief that dries up my senses, even if I were to obtain unrivalled prosperity on earth, or even lordship over the gods.

Verse 9

Sanjaya said— Having thus spoken to Hrishikesha, Arjuna said to Govinda, 'I will not fight,' and fell silent.

Verse 10

O Bharata! To him who was grieving thus between the two armies, Hrishikesha, as if smiling, spoke these words.

Verse 11

The Lord said— You grieve for those who should not be grieved for, yet you speak words of wisdom. The wise grieve neither for the living nor for the dead.

Verse 12

Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor shall any of us cease to exist in the future.

Verse 13

Just as the embodied soul passes through childhood, youth, and old age in this body, so too it passes into another body at death. A wise man is not deluded by this.

Verse 14

O son of Kunti! The contacts of senses with their objects bring cold and heat, pleasure and pain. They come and go and are impermanent. Endure them, O Arjuna!

Verse 15

O best of men! That firm person whom these do not afflict, who is the same in pleasure and pain, is fit for immortality.

Verse 16

The unreal never is; the real never ceases to be. The truth of both has been perceived by the seers of reality.

Verse 17

Know that to be indestructible by which all this is pervaded. No one can bring about the destruction of the Imperishable.

Verse 18

These bodies of the eternal, indestructible, and immeasurable embodied soul are said to have an end. Therefore, O Arjuna, fight!

Verse 19

He who thinks this soul to be the slayer and he who thinks this to be slain— both of them fail to perceive the truth. This soul slays not nor is slain.

Verse 20

The soul is never born nor dies at any time. It has not come into being and will not come into being. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. It is not slain when the body is slain.

Verse 21

O Arjuna! He who knows this soul to be indestructible, eternal, unborn, and immutable— how does such a person slay or cause another to slay?

Verse 22

Just as a person puts on new garments, giving up old and worn-out ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.

Verse 23

Weapons cannot cut this soul, nor can fire burn it, water cannot wet it, nor can the wind dry it.

Verse 24

This soul is unbreakable, cannot be burned, wetted, or dried. It is eternal, all-pervading, unchangeable, immovable, and primordial.

Verse 25

This soul is said to be unmanifest, unthinkable, and unchangeable. Therefore, knowing this, you should not grieve.

Verse 26

But even if you think this soul is perpetually born and perpetually dead, still, O mighty-armed Arjuna, you have no reason to grieve.

Verse 27

For the born, death is certain; and for the dead, birth is certain. Therefore you should not grieve over what is inevitable.

Verse 28

O Bharata! Beings are unmanifest before birth, manifest between birth and death, and unmanifest again after death. What is there to lament?

Verse 29

One sees this soul as a marvel; another speaks of it as a marvel; another hears of it as a marvel; yet even after hearing, no one truly knows it.

Verse 30

O Bharata! The soul dwelling in the body of every being is eternally indestructible. Therefore you should not grieve for any being.

Verse 31

Moreover, considering your own duty, you should not waver; for to a warrior there is nothing more auspicious than a righteous battle.

Verse 32

O Arjuna! Happy are the warriors who, unsought, get such an opportunity for battle — it is like an open door to heaven.

Verse 33

But if you will not fight this righteous war, then, having abandoned your duty and glory, you shall incur sin.

Verse 34

People will speak of your eternal dishonour, and for a man of honour, dishonour is worse than death.

Verse 35

The great chariot warriors will think you have retreated from battle out of fear, and you will fall from the great esteem you have held in their eyes.

Verse 36

Your enemies, disparaging your power, will say many unkind words about you. What could be more painful than that?

Verse 37

Either slain, you shall go to heaven; or victorious, you shall enjoy the earth. Therefore arise, O son of Kunti, resolved to fight!

Verse 38

Treating pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat as equal, engage in battle for the sake of battle; thus you shall not incur sin.

Verse 39

O Arjuna! This wisdom has been given to you as Sankhya. Now hear it in terms of Yoga, by which you shall break the bonds of karma.

Verse 40

In this path, there is no loss of effort, nor is there any adverse result. Even a little of this dharma saves one from great fear.

Verse 41

O Arjuna! Here the resolute intelligence is one-pointed. The intelligence of the irresolute is many-branched and endless.

Verse 42

O Arjuna! Those unwise men who are attached to the flowery language of the Vedas, who say 'there is nothing else,' speak such ostentatious words.

Verse 43

Desiring enjoyment and power, they speak flowery words promising rebirth as the result of their actions and various specific rituals for attaining pleasure and lordship.

Verse 44

The resolute intelligence fixed in concentration is not established in those whose minds are carried away by attachment to pleasure and power.

Verse 45

O Arjuna! The Vedas deal with the three modes of material nature. Rise above the three modes; be free from duality, ever steadfast in purity, independent of gain and security, and established in the Self.

Verse 46

As much use as there is in a small well when water overflows on all sides, so much is the use of all the Vedas for a Brahmin who has known the truth.

Verse 47

You have the right to perform your duty only, but never to the fruits of action. Let not the fruit of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.

Verse 48

O Arjuna! Do your work rooted in yoga, abandoning attachment, being equal in success and failure. This evenness of mind is called yoga.

Verse 49

O Arjuna! Action in the material world is far inferior to yoga of intelligence. Seek refuge in intelligence; pitiable are those motivated by the fruits of action.

Verse 50

One endowed with equanimity of intelligence casts off in this life both good and evil deeds. Therefore engage in yoga. Yoga is skill in action.

Verse 51

The wise, endowed with equanimity of understanding, abandon the fruits born of action. Freed from the bondage of birth, they go to the state beyond all evil.

Verse 52

When your intelligence has crossed over the mire of delusion, then you will become indifferent to all that has been heard and all that is yet to be heard.

Verse 53

When your mind, though disturbed by what you have heard, will rest steadily in meditation without wavering, then you shall attain yoga.

Verse 54

Arjuna said— O Keshava! What is the description of one of steady wisdom merged in meditation? How does the one of steady wisdom speak, sit, and walk?

Verse 55

The Lord said— O Arjuna! When a man completely gives up all the desires of the mind and finds satisfaction in the Self alone by the Self, then he is said to have steady wisdom.

Verse 56

One who is undisturbed even in threefold misery, not elated in happiness, free from attachment, fear, and anger — such a sage is called one of steady mind.

Verse 57

One who has no attachment anywhere, who neither rejoices nor hates upon obtaining good or evil — his wisdom is firmly fixed.

Verse 58

Just as a tortoise withdraws its limbs on all sides, when the wise man withdraws his senses from the sense-objects, his wisdom becomes steady.

Verse 59

Sense objects turn away from the abstinent person, but the taste for them remains. Even this taste ceases when the Supreme is realised.

Verse 60

O Arjuna! The turbulent senses forcibly carry away the mind of even a striving and wise man.

Verse 61

Having restrained all the senses and focused on Me, let one sit in yoga. One whose senses are under control has steady wisdom.

Verse 62

When a man thinks of sense objects, attachment for them arises; from attachment, desire is born; from desire, anger arises.

Verse 63

From anger, delusion arises; from delusion, confusion of memory; from confusion of memory, loss of intelligence; and from loss of intelligence, one falls down completely.

Verse 64

But a disciplined person, moving among sense objects with senses free from attraction and repulsion and under his own control, attains tranquility.

Verse 65

In that tranquility, all sorrows are destroyed; for one of tranquil mind, the intelligence soon becomes firmly established.

Verse 66

For one who is not in yoga, there is no wisdom, nor meditation. Without meditation, there is no peace; without peace, how can there be happiness?

Verse 67

Just as a boat on water is swept away by a strong wind, even one wandering sense on which the mind focuses can carry away man's wisdom.

Verse 68

Therefore, O mighty-armed Arjuna, one whose senses are withdrawn from their objects on all sides — his wisdom is firmly established.

Verse 69

What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-disciplined; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the introspective sage.

Verse 70

Just as the ocean, always full, remains undisturbed when rivers enter it, so the person into whom all desires enter without creating disturbance attains peace — not the one who longs for sense objects.

Verse 71

He who gives up all desires and moves free from longing, without the sense of 'mine' and without ego — he attains peace.

Verse 72

O Arjuna! This is the state of God-realisation. Having attained this, one is never deluded. Established in this even at the hour of death, one attains liberation — Brahma Nirvana.
