Karma Yoga — The Yoga of Action

Verse 1

Arjuna said: O Janardana, if You consider knowledge superior to action, why do You urge me to engage in this terrible battle, O Keshava?

Verse 2

With seemingly conflicting words You confuse my intellect, so please tell me decisively that one path by which I may attain the highest good.

Verse 3

The Supreme Lord said: O sinless one, in this world a twofold path of spiritual pursuit was revealed by Me earlier—the path of knowledge for the contemplative, and the path of selfless action for the active.

Verse 4

A person does not attain freedom from reaction merely by avoiding work, nor does one reach spiritual perfection simply through physical renunciation.

Verse 5

Surely, no one can remain even for a moment without performing action, for everyone is helplessly driven to act by the qualities born of material nature.

Verse 6

One who restrains the active senses while continuing to dwell on sense objects in the mind is a deluded soul and is called a hypocrite.

Verse 7

But he who controls the senses with the mind and engages the active organs in Karma Yoga without attachment is truly superior, O Arjuna.

Verse 8

Perform your prescribed duty, for action is superior to inaction; even the bare maintenance of your physical body would not be possible without work.

Verse 9

Work performed for any reason other than sacrifice binds one to this material world; therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your duties for that purpose, free from all attachment.

Verse 10

In the beginning of creation, the Lord of all beings created mankind along with sacrifices and said: Prosper by this, and may this sacrifice fulfill your righteous desires.

Verse 11

Nourish the gods with this sacrifice, and let the gods nourish you; thus, by nurturing each other, you will attain the highest welfare.

Verse 12

Pleased by sacrifice, the gods will bestow upon you the necessities of life; whoever enjoys their gifts without offering anything back to them is certainly a thief.

Verse 13

The virtuous who consume the remnants of sacrifice are freed from all sins, but those sinful people who cook solely for their own enjoyment eat only sin.

Verse 14

All living beings subsist on food grains, food grains are produced from rains, rains arise from the performance of sacrifice, and sacrifice is born of prescribed work.

Verse 15

Know that prescribed work originates from the Vedas, and the Vedas originate from the imperishable Supreme Lord; therefore, the all-pervading divine presence is eternally established in sacrifice.

Verse 16

O Partha, one who does not follow the cycle of creation thus established in this world, living a sinful life devoted merely to sensory pleasure, lives completely in vain.

Verse 17

But for the human being who rejoices only in the Self, is completely satisfied in the Self, and is fully content within, there remains no prescribed duty to perform.

Verse 18

Such a person has no personal gain from performing action nor any loss from not doing it, nor depends upon any living entity for any personal purpose.

Verse 19

Therefore, always perform your required duties without attachment, for by acting without selfish desire, a person attains the Supreme.

Verse 20

King Janaka and other great leaders attained supreme perfection through action alone; you should likewise perform your work for the guidance and welfare of society.

Verse 21

Whatever action a great person performs, common people emulate; whatever standard that leader establishes, the rest of the world follows.

Verse 22

O Partha, in all the three worlds there is no duty prescribed for Me, nor is there anything unobtained that I need to attain, yet I am constantly engaged in action.

Verse 23

For if I should ever fail to engage in work with utmost vigilance, O Partha, all human beings would follow My path in every way.

Verse 24

If I were to cease acting, all these worlds would fall into ruin, I would be the creator of social chaos, and I would destroy all these beings.

Verse 25

As the ignorant perform actions with attachment to results, O Bharata, the wise should act similarly without attachment, desiring only the welfare of the world.

Verse 26

The wise person should not confuse the minds of ignorant people attached to the fruits of action, but should inspire them to perform all duties by doing them selflessly and properly.

Verse 27

All actions are performed entirely by the natural modes of material nature, yet the soul deluded by false ego thinks, "I am the doer."

Verse 28

But one who understands the absolute truth regarding the divisions of nature's modes and actions, O mighty-armed, knows that the senses merely interact with sense objects and remains unattached.

Verse 29

Deluded by the modes of material nature, the ignorant become attached to worldly duties; a person of perfect knowledge should not unsettle such partial knowers of truth.

Verse 30

Dedicating all your actions to Me with your mind fixed on the divine, become free from desire, possessiveness, and mental anxiety, and fight.

Verse 31

Those individuals who faithfully follow this teaching of Mine with reverence and without cavil are also liberated from the bondage of all actions.

Verse 32

But know that those who look upon My teachings with malice and fail to practice them are utterly blind to all wisdom, devoid of discrimination, and ruined.

Verse 33

Even a wise person acts according to their own inborn nature, for all beings simply follow their intrinsic dispositions; what can mere repression accomplish?

Verse 34

Attraction and aversion naturally reside within each sense regarding its objects; one should never fall under their sway, for they are spiritual obstacles on one's path.

Verse 35

It is far better to perform one's own duty imperfectly than to execute another's duty flawlessly; death in one's own duty is auspicious, whereas adopting another's path is fraught with danger.

Verse 36

Arjuna said: Driven by what force, O descendant of Vrishni, does a person commit sinful acts even against their own will, as if compelled by sheer power?

Verse 37

The Supreme Lord said: It is desire alone, born of the passionate quality of nature, which later transforms into wrath; it is insatiable and exceedingly sinful—know this to be your greatest enemy in this world.

Verse 38

Just as fire is covered by smoke, a mirror by dust, and an embryo by the amnion, likewise this consciousness is veiled by selfish desire.

Verse 39

The wisdom of the wise is enveloped by this eternal enemy in the shape of desire, O son of Kunti, which burns insatiably like an unquenchable fire.

Verse 40

The senses, the mind, and the intellect are declared to be its dwelling places; through these, desire veils the living being's wisdom and bewilders it completely.

Verse 41

Therefore, O best of the Bharatas, first curb the physical senses and forcefully slay this sinful desire, the destroyer of knowledge and direct realization.

Verse 42

The senses are said to be superior to the gross physical body, the mind is superior to the senses, the intellect is higher than the mind, and what is higher than the intellect is the soul.

Verse 43

Thus knowing the Self to be higher than the intellect and steadying the lower self by the higher Self, O mighty-armed Arjuna, destroy this elusive enemy known as desire.
