The story of the gandharva Lalita, his wife Lalitā and the curse lifted by her vow, retold from the Padma Purana
About this katha
This story of the Ekadashi of the bright half of Chaitra is told in the Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda, chapter 47. Krishna tells it to Yudhishthira as the sage Vasishtha once told it to King Dilipa. The chapter gives the forest sage no name; many Hindi books call him Shringi Rishi.

Sampurna Katha
Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna which Ekadashi falls in the bright half of Chaitra. Krishna said he would tell an old story, which the sage Vasishtha had told King Dilipa when he asked the same. Vasishtha said that this Ekadashi is named Kamada.
There was a city named Nagapura, adorned with gold and jewels. Pundarika, king of the nagas, ruled there, attended by gandharvas, kinnaras and celestial nymphs. There lived a gandharva named Lalita and his wife, a nymph named Lalitā. They loved each other dearly, and each was always in the other's heart.
Once Lalita was singing and dancing in King Pundarika's assembly, and Lalitā was not with him. As he sang he thought of her, and his tongue stumbled over the words of the song. A naga named Karkotaka caught the fault and told the king.
King Pundarika was enraged. He cursed Lalita: because he had been under the sway of love for his wife while singing before the king, he should become a demon, an eater of raw flesh and of men. At once Lalita became a dreadful demon, his body eight yojanas high. Seeing her husband so, Lalitā was stricken with grief and found no peace.
Lalita, now a demon, roamed a dense forest, and Lalitā followed him weeping. In the forest she saw a lovely hermitage and a sage of calm appearance. She bowed to him. The sage, in compassion, asked who she was and why she had come. She said that she was Lalitā, daughter of the gandharva Viradhanvan, and that her husband had become a demon through a curse. She asked by what merit he could be freed from that state.
The sage said that the bright half of Chaitra was then running: she should keep the Kamada Ekadashi and give its merit to her husband, and his sin would be gone that instant. Lalitā fasted on both Ekadashi and Dwadashi. On Dwadashi, in the presence of a Brahmin and before Lord Vishnu, she declared that by the merit of the Kamada vow, her husband's demon state should be removed.
At that instant Lalita's sin left him and he regained his gandharva form. The two, more beautiful than before, mounted a celestial car and departed. The story's closing statement of fruits says that this vow removes even sins such as the demon state, and that reading or hearing it gives the fruit of a Vajapeya sacrifice.
