Sampurna Katha
Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna which Ekadashi falls in the bright half of Margashirsha, what its procedure is, and which deity is worshipped on that day. Krishna said its name is Mokshada, and told him an old story about it.
There was a city named Champaka, home to many devotees of Vishnu and to Brahmins learned in the Vedas. A king named Vaikhanasa ruled there, caring for his subjects as for his own sons. One night the king saw in a dream that his forefathers had fallen into a low state.
In the morning the king told the dream to the Brahmins. He said he had seen his forefathers in hell, pleading with him to deliver them, and that since then he found no joy in kingdom, elephants, horses, wife or sons. He asked what vow or austerity would set his forefathers free.
The Brahmins said that the hermitage of the sage Parvata, who knew the past and the future, was nearby, and that he should go there. The king went at once. In the hermitage the sage Parvata sat among sages learned in the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas. The king bowed full length before him, and the sage asked after the welfare of the kingdom.
The king said that all was well in the kingdom, but that he had seen his forefathers in hell in a dream, and asked by what merit they could be delivered. The sage Parvata closed his eyes and meditated for a short while. Then he said that the king's father, proud of his kingdom, had left his wife at her fertile time and gone to a village on royal business. The story says that for this fault he and his forefathers fell into hell.
The sage told him to keep the Mokshada Ekadashi of the bright half of Margashirsha and to give its merit to his father. The king returned home. When Margashirsha came, he observed the vow and gave its merit to his father.
As the merit was given, flowers rained from the sky. The king's father was set free along with his forefathers. From the sky the father blessed his son, and went to heaven. The story's closing statement of fruits says that the sins of one who keeps this Ekadashi are destroyed and that he gains liberation after death, and that reading or hearing it gives the fruit of a Vajapeya sacrifice.
