Sampurna Katha

Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the Ekadashi of the bright half of Jyeshtha. Krishna said that Vyasa, the son of Satyavati, who knows the essence of the scriptures, would explain it. Yudhishthira then asked Vyasa what the duties of Vishnu's devotees are.

Vyasa said that the duties taught by Manu and Vasishtha are hard to keep in the Kali age, but the Ekadashi vow is easy: it needs little wealth or effort and gives great fruit. One should not eat on the Ekadashi of either fortnight. On Dwadashi one should bathe, worship Lord Vishnu, honour a Brahmin, and then eat.

Hearing this, Bhimasena trembled like a leaf of the ashvattha tree. He told Vyasa that Yudhishthira, their mother Kunti, Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva never eat on Ekadashi, and tell him to do the same. But he could not bear hunger. He would give gifts duly and worship Lord Vishnu, but he could not fast.

Vyasa said that if he wished for heaven and feared hell, he should not eat on the Ekadashi of either fortnight. Bhima said that he could not manage even on one meal a day. A fire named Vrika burned always in his belly and was quieted only by eating again and again. He asked to be told one single vow by which he might gain heaven.

Then Vyasa told him to fast without water on the Ekadashi of the bright half of Jyeshtha. On that day, from one sunrise to the next, he should neither eat nor drink; even a mouthful of water breaks the vow. On the morning of Dwadashi he should bathe, give water and gold to Brahmins, and then eat with them. The story says that this one vow gives the fruit of all the Ekadashis of the year.

Bhimasena kept this vow. From then, the story says, this Dwadashi has been known as Pandava-Dwadashi. The story's closing statement of fruits says that one who fasts without water on this Ekadashi and gives a pitcher of water is freed from sins and goes to the abode of Lord Vishnu.
