Sampurna Katha
Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna the name of the Ekadashi of the dark half of Ashadha. Krishna said its name is Yogini, and told him a story about it.
In the city of Alaka lived Kubera, king of the yakshas, a great devotee of Lord Shiva. A yaksha named Hemamalin was his attendant, whose work was to gather flowers for him. He brought flowers from the Manasa lake and gave them to Kubera, who worshipped Shiva with them. Hemamalin's wife was named Vishalakshi, and she was very beautiful.
One day Hemamalin brought the flowers but, lost in love for his wife, stayed at home and did not go to Kubera. Kubera was in the temple worshipping Shiva, and waited for the flowers until midday. Angered by the delay, he sent yakshas to look for him. They came back and said that Hemamalin was at home with his wife. Kubera sent for him, and Hemamalin came and stood before him, unbathed and afraid.
Kubera said that he had slighted Lord Shiva. He cursed him to be parted from his wife, to suffer eighteen kinds of leprosy, and to fall from that place. Hemamalin fell from there and wandered, tormented by the disease. He had no ease by day and no sleep by night. Yet through the power of his service in Shiva's worship, his memory stayed with him. In his wandering he came to the Himalaya, where he found the sage Markandeya.
Trembling, Hemamalin bowed at the sage's feet from a distance. The sage called him near and asked how he had come by this disease. Hemamalin told him truthfully that he was Kubera's attendant and brought lotuses each day for Kubera's worship of Shiva; that one day, lost in his wife, he had forgotten the time, and Kubera had cursed him. He asked the sage to show him a way.
The sage Markandeya said that because he had told the truth and not lied, he would teach him an auspicious vow: to keep the Yogini Ekadashi of the dark half of Ashadha. Hemamalin bowed full length before the sage and kept the vow as he was told. All eighteen kinds of his leprosy disappeared completely, and he became happy. The story's closing statement of fruits says that the merit of this vow equals that of feeding eighty-eight thousand Brahmins.
