The sacred Purana legend of Queen Veeravati and Karwa Mata's marital grace
Sampurna Katha
In ancient times in Indraprastha, there lived a virtuous princess named Veeravati, beloved by her seven brothers. On Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, she observed the waterless Karwa Chauth fast. Seeing her swoon with hunger, her brothers deceptively lit a lamp behind a banyan tree to mimic the moon. Veeravati offered Arghya and broke her fast, whereupon her husband instantly passed away.
Moved by Veeravati's repentance and weeping, Goddess Gauri (Parvati) manifested. Veeravati observed the vow with full devotion throughout the year, and by the grace of Goddess Gauri, her husband was restored to life. Since then, married women observe the Karwa Chauth fast for their husbands' longevity and enduring marital harmony.
