The traditional stories of Veeravati and of Karwa, told on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi
About this katha
The katha is heard at the evening gathering of married women on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, before moonrise. Two stories are commonly told: that of Veeravati, whose fast was broken by a false moon, and that of Karwa, who saved her husband from a crocodile.

Pujan Vidhi(सूर्योदय से चंद्रोदय तक / From sunrise until moonrise)
Sankalp: On the morning of Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, bathe and take the vow to keep the fast until moonrise. In Punjab and the north-west, the sargi sent by the mother-in-law is eaten before dawn; elsewhere this custom is not kept.
Preparing the place: Before sunset, clean the place of worship. Spread a red cloth on a low seat (chowki) and place an image of Shiva and Parvati with Ganesha and Kartikeya.
The karwa: Fill the karwa with water and put wheat or sweets on its lid. Mark it with roli and akshat and tie moli round its neck.
Hearing the katha: In the evening, sit with the women of the family or neighbourhood, holding a few grains of wheat, and hear the katha. In many places the thalis are passed round the circle while traditional songs are sung.
Gauri puja: Offer the suhaag items and prasad to Goddess Parvati, take the blessings of the elders, and wait for the moon.
Moonrise and arghya: When the moon rises, look at it through the sieve with the lamp lit, and offer arghya of water.
Ending the fast: By custom the wife then looks at her husband through the sieve, and the fast is ended with water and a sweet, in many homes given by the husband's hand. Details differ from family to family.
Sampurna Katha
बहुत समय पहले एक धर्मात्मा के सात पुत्र और एक पुत्री थी, जिसका नाम वीरवती था। सात भाइयों की अकेली बहन होने के कारण वह सबकी लाड़ली थी। विवाह के बाद कार्तिक मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी को वीरवती अपने मायके आई हुई थी। उसने घर की सुहागिन स्त्रियों के साथ करवा चौथ का निर्जला व्रत रखा।
Long ago a good man had seven sons and one daughter, Veeravati, the only sister of seven brothers and dear to them all. After her marriage she was at her parents' home on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi, and kept the waterless Karwa Chauth fast with the married women of the house.
वीरवती सात भाइयों की इकलौती बहन थी। विवाह के बाद उसने मायके में करवा चौथ का निर्जला व्रत रखा।
दिन ढलते-ढलते भूख और प्यास से वीरवती बेहाल होकर मूर्छित होने लगी। भाइयों से बहन का यह कष्ट देखा नहीं गया। उन्होंने दूर एक ऊंचे वटवृक्ष पर चढ़कर छलनी की ओट में जलता दीपक रख दिया और बहन से कहा कि चंद्रमा निकल आया है, अर्घ्य देकर भोजन कर लो। वीरवती ने भाइयों पर विश्वास करके उसी प्रकाश को चंद्रमा समझा, अर्घ्य दिया और भोजन करने बैठ गई। जैसे ही उसने पहला ग्रास मुंह में रखा, समाचार मिला कि उसके पति का देहांत हो गया है।
As the day wore on, Veeravati grew faint with hunger and thirst. Her brothers could not bear to see it. They climbed a tall banyan tree some way off, set a lamp behind a sieve, and told her the moon had risen. Trusting them, she offered arghya to that light and sat down to eat. With the first mouthful came the news that her husband had died.
बहन का कष्ट न देख पाने पर भाइयों ने छलनी के पीछे दीपक रखकर नकली चंद्रमा दिखा दिया। वीरवती ने व्रत खोल लिया और तभी उसके पति की मृत्यु का समाचार आया।
वीरवती शोक में विलाप करने लगी। उसकी पुकार सुनकर माता पार्वती प्रकट हुईं और बताया कि तुम्हारा व्रत छल के कारण चंद्रोदय से पहले टूट गया था। देवी ने उसे धैर्य बंधाया और कहा कि वर्षभर हर महीने की कृष्ण चतुर्थी का व्रत विधिपूर्वक करो, और अगले कार्तिक की चतुर्थी को फिर पूरी निष्ठा से करवा चौथ का व्रत रखो; तब तुम्हारे पति जीवित हो उठेंगे।
Veeravati wept in grief. Goddess Parvati appeared and told her that her fast had been broken before moonrise through a trick. She comforted her and told her to keep the fast on the Krishna Chaturthi of every month for a year, and to keep Karwa Chauth again with full faith the next Kartik; then her husband would live again.
माता पार्वती ने वीरवती को बताया कि व्रत छल से टूटा था, और वर्षभर की चतुर्थियों तथा अगले करवा चौथ का व्रत रखने को कहा।
वीरवती ने माता पार्वती की बात मानकर पूरे वर्ष हर चतुर्थी का व्रत रखा। अगले वर्ष कार्तिक कृष्ण चतुर्थी आई तो उसने दिनभर निर्जला रहकर शाम को पूजा की और रात को सचमुच चंद्रमा निकलने पर ही अर्घ्य दिया। उसकी निष्ठा और धैर्य से प्रसन्न होकर माता पार्वती ने उसके पति को फिर जीवन दिया। कथा के अनुसार तभी से सुहागिन महिलाएं यह व्रत रखती हैं।
Veeravati did as the Goddess said and kept every Chaturthi for a year. When Kartik Krishna Chaturthi came again she fasted without water all day, did the puja in the evening, and offered arghya only when the real moon had risen. Pleased with her faith and patience, Goddess Parvati gave her husband life again. The story says married women have kept this fast ever since.
वीरवती ने वर्षभर व्रत रखा और अगले करवा चौथ पर सच्चे चंद्रमा को अर्घ्य दिया; माता पार्वती ने उसके पति को फिर जीवन दिया।
एक और प्रचलित लोककथा करवा नाम की पतिव्रता स्त्री की है, जो अपने पति के साथ नदी के किनारे रहती थी। एक दिन उसका पति नदी में स्नान कर रहा था कि एक मगरमच्छ ने उसका पैर पकड़ लिया। पति की पुकार सुनकर करवा दौड़ी आई और उसने कच्चे सूत के धागे से मगरमच्छ को बांध दिया।
Another well-known folk story is of a devoted wife named Karwa, who lived with her husband beside a river. One day a crocodile seized his leg while he was bathing. Hearing his cry, Karwa ran to him and bound the crocodile with a thread of raw cotton.
करवा नाम की पतिव्रता स्त्री ने अपने पति को पकड़ने वाले मगरमच्छ को कच्चे सूत के धागे से बांध दिया।
फिर करवा ने यमराज को पुकारा और उनसे कहा कि इस मगरमच्छ को दंड दें और मेरे पति की रक्षा करें। यमराज ने कहा कि मगरमच्छ की आयु अभी शेष है। करवा अपनी बात पर अडिग रही। उसकी निष्ठा और दृढ़ता देखकर यमराज ने मगरमच्छ को यमलोक भेज दिया और उसके पति को दीर्घायु का वरदान दिया। इसी करवा के नाम से यह व्रत करवा चौथ कहलाता है, ऐसी लोकमान्यता है।
Karwa then called on Yama and asked him to punish the crocodile and save her husband. Yama said the crocodile's time had not yet come. Karwa would not give way. Seeing her faith and firmness, Yama sent the crocodile to his realm and blessed her husband with long life. Folk belief has it that the fast takes its name from this Karwa.
करवा की निष्ठा देखकर यमराज ने मगरमच्छ को यमलोक भेजा और उसके पति को दीर्घायु का वरदान दिया।
