खर्वं स्थूलतनुं गजेन्द्रवदनं लम्बोदरं सुन्दरं प्रस्यन्दन्मदगन्धलुब्धमधुपव्यालोलगण्डस्थलम्। दन्ताघातविदारितारिरुधिरैः सिन्दूरशोभाकरं वन्दे शैलसुतासुतं गणपतिं सिद्धिप्रदं कामदम्॥

kharvaṁ sthūlatanuṁ gajendravadanaṁ lambodaraṁ sundaraṁ prasyandanmadagandhalubdhamadhupavyālolagaṇḍasthalam | dantāghātavidāritārirudhiraiḥ sindūraśobhākaraṁ vande śailasutāsutaṁ gaṇapatiṁ siddhipradaṁ kāmadam ||

Meaning: I bow to Ganapati, short in stature and stout of limb, elephant-faced, large-bellied and handsome, whose cheeks are adorned with intoxicated bees seeking fragrant nectar, red like vermilion, the beloved son of Parvati, bestower of spiritual attainments and fulfiller of righteous aspirations.

The Prathama Pujya: Why Ganesha is Worshipped First

Before any deity is invoked, before any foundation stone is laid, and before any ceremony begins, Ganesha must be worshipped first. According to Puranic lore, when the gods competed to encircle the universe first, Kartikeya raced upon his peacock across all worlds. Ganesha simply walked around his parents—Shiva and Parvati—declaring that the parents embody the entire cosmos. Pleased with his profound insight, Shiva granted him the boon of priority in all worship.

The Scribe of the Mahabharata

In the sacred tradition of literature, Sage Veda Vyasa sought a scribe capable of taking down the monumental epic Mahabharata without pause. Ganesha accepted the challenge on the condition that Vyasa dictate continuously without interruption. When Ganesha's stylus broke during the dictation, he broke off his own right tusk to continue writing without delay, earning the sacred title 'Ekadanta'.

Sankashti and the Wisdom of Fasting

Observed on the fourth day after the full moon, Sankashti Chaturthi is among the most popular monthly fasts. Devotees fast through the day, dedicating their mind to Ganesha, and break the fast only after sighting and offering arghya to the moon at night. It is believed to remove deep-rooted obstacles, emotional anxieties, and financial distress.
