ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचंद्रावतंसं रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलांगं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम्। पद्मासीनं समंतात् स्तुतममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृत्तिं वसानं विश्वाद्यं विश्वबीजं निखिलभयहरं पंचवक्त्रं त्रिनेत्रम्॥
dhyāyennityaṁ maheśaṁ rajatagirinibhaṁ cārucandrāvataṁsaṁ ratnākalpojjvalāṅgaṁ paraśumṛgavarābhītihastaṁ prasannam | padmāsīnaṁ samantāt stutamamaragaṇairvyāghrakṛttiṁ vasānaṁ viśvādyaṁ viśvabījaṁ nikhilabhayaharaṁ pañcavaktraṁ trinetram ||
Meaning: One should eternally meditate upon Maheshvara, radiant like a silver mountain, adorned with the crescent moon, four-armed holding axe, deer, and gestures of blessing and fearlessness, seated in lotus posture, wrapped in tiger skin, the source of the cosmos, remover of all fear, five-faced and three-eyed.

Unlike kings adorned in gold, Shiva is an ascetic dwelling on Mount Kailasa, besmeared with sacred ash (bhasma), wearing serpents as ornaments, and immersed in perpetual samadhi. He represents the stillness behind all movement and the compassionate master of liberation (Moksha).
The Puranic tradition identifies twelve supreme pillars of light (Jyotirlingas) spanning from Somnath on the Saurashtra coast to Kedarnath in the snowy Himalayas and Rameshwaram in the deep south. Shiva is celebrated as 'Ashutosh'—he who is easily pleased. Offerings of plain water, milk, bilva leaves (belpatra), and holy ash are held dearer than elaborate displays of wealth. Observances such as Pradosha Vrata, Monday fasts, and the great vigil of Maha Shivaratri emphasize quiet inward contemplation, restraint, and selfless surrender.
