Transcendence and Supreme Consciousness
Shiva represents the transcendent void from which creation emerges and into which it dissolves. Unlike kings adorned in gold, Shiva is an ascetic dwelling on Mount Kailasa, besmeared with sacred ash (bhasma), wearing serpents as ornaments, and immersed in perpetual samadhi. He represents the stillness behind all movement and the compassionate master of liberation (Moksha).
